Also in our barn are two more cars. My MX5 track car and my son's semi abandoned BMW coupe. I'm going to put the BMW back on the road and drive it in the summer while he hops around the world skiing.

Petrolhead history

Even as a boy I remember being panicked by the thought that by the time I was old enough to drive cars would have been replaced by self-driving autonomous spacecraft. As it turned out I'm heading towards sixty and autonomous driving is only just becomeing a possibility.

I wanted to drive so much that I was behind the wheel of my Dad's cars pretending at every opportunity. By the time I was twelve I was driving on provate roads, anything from the Scout minibus to an Uncles Opel Kadet. On my 17th birthday I had my first lesson, three weeks later the test was booked and, after an interminable wait, I passed four weeks later. Then disappointment, no car to drive, not allowed to drive my father's company car. 8 weeks before the opportunity arose.
